How to Join

Thank you for your interest in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma).

 

There are two ways to become a member of our organization!

 

As a Student

Students enrolled in a nursing program and meeting the following criteria are invited to join through one of Sigma’s chapters located around the world.

 

Undergraduate students must

  • have completed ½ (one half) of the nursing curriculum;
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.0 or higher);
  • rank in the highest 35 percent of the graduating class in scholarship;
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity.

Registered nurse students must

  • have completed 12 credit hours at current school;
  • have completed ½ (one half) of the nursing curriculum;
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.0 or higher);
  • rank in the highest 35 percent of the graduating class in scholarship;
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity.

Graduate students (master's and doctorate) must*

  • have completed ¼ (one quarter) of the nursing curriculum;
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.5 or higher);
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity.

*Students in graduate programs who are registered nurses, legally recognized to practice in their country and have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field, shall be eligible to be considered as a Nurse Leader at any point in the program. 



As a Nurse Leader

Nursing professionals not previously inducted as nursing students and not currently enrolled in a nursing program can also join as a Nurse Leader using the criteria listed below. 

 

Nurse Leader candidates must:

  • Be legally recognized to practice nursing in their country
  • Have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field
  • Demonstrate achievement in nursing

Eta Eta Chapter has an annual membership cycle. 

April Membership Intent Forms are available in Diehl Hall and online.
May Interested students submit resumes and completed Membership Intent Forms to Eta Eta Faculty Counselors
June Eta Eta faculty counselors verify applicants' eligibility for membership.
August Applicants receive a letter stating that they are or are not eligible. Those who are eligible receive an email message from Sigma with instructions on how to complete their membership application and pay the membership dues.
September Applicants complete the membership application online by a specified date.
November Our Induction Ceremony recognizes our new Inductees 
December We welcome the new members with a Holiday Dinner, complements of Eta Eta Chapter
Nurse Leaders can apply at anytime during the year. However, we encourage potential Nurse Leaders to apply before August 1 of any year so that they can participate in the November Induction Ceremony.
